Summer Survival Guide

Each season has its set of challenges and summer is no exception. We have just what you need to help you and your pet get through the summer safe and sound. Read on and find out more.

1. Believe it or not, light colored dogs and cats need sun protection such as sun block—especially on the nose. If you can help it, try not to expose your light colored pet to the sun for long periods of time.

2. Have picnics with your dog. Pack the Frisbee, his favorite toy. Feel free to share your Gatorade or your water with your furry friend. However, rather share your picnic munchies with your dog, bless him with Wholesome Hearts Treats. They will make his taste buds go wow!

3. Summer is when our kitties shed the most. Try to spend five to ten minutes a day with your kitty, combing, brushing, and cuddling—whatever will make her happy. Try some
Purr-fectly Natural Gourmet Cat Treats - Hairball Formula.

4. During the summer months, our pets' ears are vulnerable to problems. Our swimmers need their ears cleaned once they get home. If not, the ear becomes a magnet for unwelcome dirt, parasites and other unfriendly things. Clean your pet's ears regularly with HPN's Ear Care. Cats can be vulnerable to tiny mites that create very itchy ears. The ear cleaner doesn't kill them but makes the environment of the ear unsuitable for their growth. Cats love the smell of this cleaner.

5. Beware of GI problems with the summer time activities. It gets darker later so walking, running and playing also runs later. Don't feed your pet until AFTER the fun. A full tummy during heavy play can mean GI distress and bloating.

6. When washing your pet, consider using the kitchen or bathroom sink so that you can control the water temperature, keeping it tepid. Outside hose water is generally cold. Check your pet's body for any abnormalities. An insect bite can manifest as a red or crusty spot. After bath, try some Soothing Mist to help ease irritation from romping on the lawn.

7. Is your pet afraid of thunder? If you choose to desensitize your pet to the noise using the CD's, use our Wholesome Hearts for dogs or Purr-fectly Natural Treats for cats—the yummiest of training tools!

8. When running on the beach or in the park, most animal experts tell you not to let your dog off the leash. Use a halter and a long leash. If you want to give your pet a greater sense of freedom, use the kind of leash that can lengthen.

9. Because we have a tendency to walk our pets more frequently and leisurely in the summer, collars are worn more frequently. Cat owners wisely put collars on their indoor cats, just in case the open door or the sound of birds entices your cat for a taste of the great outdoors. A lot of our pets get collar rashes. This affects both cats and dogs. Flea and tick collars can be especially irritating. What to do? Take off the offending collar, spray Soothing Mist and search for a different kind of collar.

10. Change your pet's water at least twice a day since warmth causes pathogen growth—even inside. Since cats need to drink a lot of water, a fountain regularly cleaned is the answer to safe drinking.
